The Unspeakable Gift of the Holy Ghost

Chapter 5

Entertaining Angels and Being Aware

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." - Heb. 13:2

Anyone speaking with the Tongue of Angels is in fact an Angel.  And there are 2 major insights associated with this doctrine, they are:

  1. We are acting as angels if we are speaking with the Tongue of Angels.
  2. If we feel the witness of the Holy Ghost teaching us, then there is an Angel present.

Here we would like to focus on the second point and specifically the ability to recognize ministering angels both seen and unseen.  Yes, angels from both sides of the veil do visit and minister on the earth.

Most people are like the servant of Elisha who could not see the angels that surrounded Elisha, (2Kings 6:15-17).  These angels were invisible to the servant until Elisha prayed for the servant to see them.

In like manner, there are unseen angels around us that minister to us.  We can become aware of them and begin entering into conversations with them through the Holy Ghost.  Mormon taught his son saying,

“36. Or have angels ceased to appear unto the children of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved?
37. Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain." - Moro. 7 36-37

Non-mortal Angels most often minister from behind the veil or appear as normal people rather than in some display of great light and glory.  The question is, “How do we recognize them and begin to enter into dialogs with them?”

Consider the following scripture references:

  1. Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.” -  2 Ne. 32:3
  2. “Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.” -  2 Ne. 32:3
  3. “For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.” -  2 Ne. 32:5

Take notice that angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost and so they speak the words of Christ.  Both the Words of Christ and the Holy Ghost will tell us all things what we should do.  The relationship between the Words of Christ and the Holy Ghost is clear.

Angels or messengers of God speak by the power of the Holy Ghost wherefore they speak the words of Christ.  This is the nature of angels.  This is a key point often overlooked but vitally important to those who desire to recognize and talk to angels as well as to have “Communion with the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn”, (D&C 107:19).

Before continuing we must understand the in detail how the Holy Ghost teaches us all things.

To speak with angels, it is essential to understand the following statement, “The Holy Ghost does NOT speak for himself.”

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” - John 16:13

One interpretation of this scripture is that the Holy Ghost only witnesses when truth is taught but is not the one teaching the truth.  Simply put, it means that when we feel the power of the Holy Ghost, have insights, revelations or other experiences, it is coming from someone speaking by the power of the Holy Ghost to us.

When missionaries teach by the power of the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost gives a witness to both the investigators and the missionaries regarding the truth being taught.  But the Holy Ghost does not speak the words.  He only witnesses of what is being spoken.

The Holy Ghost bears witness of the truth being taught using the fruits of the spirit which are peace, love, joy, gentleness, etc. (see Gal. 5:22).  He is the Comforter.  All these things are internal feelings and experiences.  By this witness we are taught all things.

In order to have a witness, there must be a message or something to witness.  If there is a message, then there must be a messenger.

Whenever we feel the Holy Ghost, we always know that a messenger of God is speaking to us, whether seen or unseen.  It is our privilege to recognize these Angels, speak with them and learn from the Spirit the messages God has for us.

The unseen angels minister to us through the power of the Holy Ghost.  We have all experienced this on multiple occasions.

Those who are aware will recall receiving revelations in their quiet solitude while meditating, reading or praying.  They may have had visions or flashes of insight without a visible teacher present.

Because the Holy Ghost does not speak for himself, there must be someone else present bringing you the message that he is witnessing.

Remember in such instances that if there is a message, then there must be a messenger.  If they are speaking to you by the Power of the Holy Ghost, then they are ministering to you the words of Christ and are angels of God.

This messenger is an Angel sent to teach you.  You cannot receive a witness of the Holy Ghost without a message being sent.  You cannot receive a message without a messenger.  So if you are taught something by the witness and power of the Holy Ghost, then you are being taught by an angel, seen or unseen.

For those who have the faith to converse with angels, you must be able to recognize the spirit.  Start with a sincere pray to invite the spirit and the teaching presence of angels or simply learn to recognize the everyday experiences you may already be having.

When you receive a message that is testified by the spirit, look for the messenger or angel that delivered the message.  If that messenger is unseen, then you might try to communicate with the angel by thanking the messenger for the message and asking for their name.

Simple conversations often begin when you ask the Angel why they have interest in you or your well being.  Vocalizing words are necessary but might be helpful.  You will notice that you received the message without words and can just as easily send messages without words.

Thanks the Spirit for being present and for facilitating the conversation.  If you are speaking with the Power of the Holy Ghost then communication is instant, pleasant, unmistakable and perfect.

With time, you can learn to call on angels to teach you, assist you or help others who are struggling.  But all communication with angels happens via the Holy Ghost and the Tongue of Angels.  For those seeking the ministering of angels in their life, the above simple insights will open the door for you.
