The Unspeakable Gift of the Holy Ghost

Chapter 1

The Unspeakable Gift of the Holy Ghost

“God shall give unto you knowledge by his Holy Spirit, yea, by the unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, that has not been revealed since the world was until now;” - D&C 121:26

The title given to the Holy Ghost in the above  scripture is “The Unspeakable Gift”.  This Gift of the Holy Ghost is truly unspeakable!  In this book we will explore this unspeakable gift that God has given to man and show you many of the hidden and less known mysteries associated with it.

We will attempt to demystify, encourage and instruct on the gifts of the spirit including speaking in tongues, healing, prophecy (Prophet), seeing (Seer), revelation (Revelator), speaking with angels and ultimately receiving and using the power of God which are all directly associated with this Unspeakable Gift of the Holy Ghost.

A Quick Review

This book comes immediately after the book, “The Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ – Making Your Calling and Election Sure”.  That first book lays a foundation for what is being discussed in this book.  It shows us how the “Preparatory Gospel” with its Aaronic or Preparatory Priesthood symbols and ordinances prepare us to receive the “Fulness of the Gospel” of Jesus Christ.  It further explains how that “Fulness of the Gospel” when recognized and followed will inevitably lead us to receive our Calling and Election Made Sure which happens when a person receives a promise from God that they will be exalted in the Celestial kingdom.

As the integral part of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost is the key to receiving all that God has to give.

The Role of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost’s most basic and fundamental role is to be “The Witness of Truth”.  All of the blessings and gifts of the spirit originate as a result of this simple role.

“And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” - Moro. 10:5

If the truth you seek is to know of the existence of God or Christ then the Spirit bears record of that truth.  If you want to not only know that God and Christ exist but to know the nature of God and Christ then the Holy Ghost again will bear record of those truths.

“And the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and the Father giveth the Holy Ghost unto the children of men, because of me.” - 3 Ne. 28:11

When attempting to learn something, have a revelation or vision, receive a message from an angel or recognize when truth is spoken from the pulpit, the witness of the Holy Ghost is what you look for.

The Holy Ghost is a God and cannot lie.  When the Holy Ghost witnesses of truth, then it is true.  If it witnesses that we have or will receive a blessing, then the blessing is “sealed” or bound to us.  Such promises are certain.

When the Spirit seals or promises blessings, it is known as “The Holy Spirit of Promise” and is the validating stamp given by God directly which indicates God’s approval/acceptance.  It will accompany every ordinance, blessing and action that is approved by God.

In this way, God ultimately has the final say regarding every blessing and ordinance performed by his anointed but imperfect servants, from baptism to priesthood ordinations and finally to Calling and Election made sure.

“And verily I say unto you, that the conditions of this law are these: All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead. - D&C 132:7

This essentially places all worthiness questions directly in God’s hands.

When we receive our Calling and Election made sure, we are essentially receiving a witness of the truth that we have been promised exaltation by God.  When the witness of truth is regarding a blessing, it is called the Holy Spirit of Promise.

The Importance of the Holy Ghost

There are many blessings that come from the gift of the Holy Ghost!  It is not God’s greatest gift, but it is the key to receiving all of God’s gifts including the greatest gift which is eternal life.

The Holy Ghost is the key to all things.  If we intend to be a part of and experience the kingdom of God on Earth as it is in Heaven, then we must become familiar with inviting, recognizing and following the directions of the Holy Ghost.  This cannot be emphasized enough.

The Holy Ghost is so important in our lives that Jesus taught that it is better to speak against Christ than to blaspheme, (speak against or replace with another authority), the Holy Ghost.

"31. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." - Matt 12:31-32, (See also; Luke 12:19)

This same doctrine has been repeated throughout the scriptures.  Blaspheme against the Holy Ghost is known as the ONLY unpardonable sin and is even worse than murder which is difficult to forgive, but still forgivable.

"But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:" - Mark 3:29

“5. Know ye not, my son, that these things are an abomination in the sight of the Lord; yea, most abominable above all sins save it be the shedding of innocent blood or denying the Holy Ghost?
6. For behold, if ye deny the Holy Ghost when it once has had place in you, and ye know that ye deny it, behold, this is a sin which is unpardonable; yea, and whosoever murdereth against the light and knowledge of God, it is not easy for him to obtain forgiveness; yea, I say unto you, my son, that it is not easy for him to obtain a forgiveness.” – Alma 39:5-6

We hope that you will come to accept and understand that the Holy Ghost is not simply a nice thing to have and a help or guide but a vital component of the plan.

The Holy Ghost is the final authority in our lives.  It is God’s ordained witness of truth.  To place anyone or anything as a higher authority in our lives is to blaspheme the Holy Ghost.  It is in essence to strip the Holy Ghost of its God given role and responsibility, destroy the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and bring our progression to a screeching halt.

Anyone that belittles the role of the Holy Ghost is walking on dangerous ground and does not possess the same spirit by which Christ declared that it is better to speak evil of even himself than to speak evil of the Holy Ghost.
