In ancient Rome, a collector of taxes for the government. Publicans were generally hated by the Jews. Some publicans readily accepted the gospel (Matt. 9:910; Luke 19:28).

Items of note:
The Jews believed the spirit of a dead person remained near the body for up to 3 days. After that, all hope of the person recovering was gone, as their spirit had gone to the Spirit World. Thus, Jesus showed he could call spirits, even from the Spirit World.
Purification was a 7 day process. Those who came to Jerusalem ahead of the Passover would have to arrive at least a week early in order to complete the purification rituals before the feast. This would be required of those who travelled in foreign lands.
