A little off topic: The portion of Christ and His Father making their abode as spoken of in John 14 (to be in the Father presence) is a greater blessing of which I cannot discuss on this thread. There will always be a trial of faith to be had to augment our faith for each endowment of pure knowledge but the trial of "exceeding faith" has to do with entering into the presence of the Father (must have the fulness of the 2nd grand order to do so, JST Gen. 14:31). I personally think Abraham was going for that and was well passed his initial calling and election made sure (2nd comf.) before his great trial.
That is so amazing that you shared that thought about "exceeding faith." I have been contemplating this topic for quite some time now. I notice the same qualification is mentioned in Alma 13.
Quote: And again, my brethren, I would cite your minds forward to the time when the Lord God gave these commandments unto his children; and I would that ye should remember that the Lord God ordained priests, after his holy order, which was after the order of his Son, to teach these things unto the people.
2 And those priests were ordained after the order of his Son, in a manner that thereby the people might know in what manner to look forward to his Son for redemption.
3 And this is the manner after which they were ordained--being called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of God, on account of their exceeding faith and good works; in the first place being left to choose good or evil; therefore they having chosen good, and exercising exceedingly great faith, are called with a holy calling, yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory redemption for such.
As you mentioned in Genesis 14, when one receives this priesthood, one has the power by faith to stand in the presence of God. I personally feel that anyone who stood in the presence of God prior to this life,(Abraham 3) was endowed with this priesthood after the manner that is described in Alma 13. Yet, we must come back to it here in this life.
I'd love to hear any more you might offer to share on this subject.
