My MTC companion had an experience he related to me I would like to include in this topic. He was a convert the church and was firm in his commitment to the Lord and to the Gospel, despite only being a member one year. As he was going through the MTC experience, he thought he was about as pure and righteous as anybody could be. He figured if Joseph Smith could have a visit from the Savior at 14 years of age, why couldn't this Elder also have one at age 19?
One Fast Sunday, this Elder went to a study room all by himself and poured out his heart and soul, asking to witness the Savior. He was there for the better part of an hour and was getting no responses to his pleadings, and was starting to get discouraged. When he stood up to leave, he heard an audible voice come from about 4 or 5 feet in front of him, but he saw nobody. The voice said clearly to him, "If you would receive a testimony of Me, you must first gain a testimony of Joseph Smith."
From that day on, this Elder obtained all the books about Joseph Smith he was allowed to bring with him to his mission assignment and studied them throughout his mission. He was a stellar missionary and one of the joys of my mission was being allowed to know him and work with him. He was best man at my wedding reception.
