Gospel Doctrine Book of Mormon Lesson 3
The Vision of the Tree of Life

Does following a vision get us to the Tree of Life?
8:5-8..... Lehi sees a vision of the Lord and follows, but loses sight of the Lord and is lost
..... Think of how this represents Lehi's life and his journey to find God.

What is the Rod of Iron? What does it do?
11:24-25. The Meaning of the Iron Rod is the Word of God found in the scriptures.
8:29-30.. It is the most sure way to the tree of life.
15:23-24. Why the Iron Rod is important

What is the Great and Spacious Building? What happens to those who seek it?
11:35-36. The building is the pride of the world.
Caution: MY OPINION -> Those who are in it are Celebrities in our day, what the world is most proud of.
8:31-34.. Most who seek it die in seeking it or lose their way.

What does the filthy water represent?
12:16-18. The filthy water is temptation (only way into the building)

How can we follow the example of Nephi in seeking the truth of visions and prophecies?
10:17-22. A recipe for getting answers from God

Why doesn't the Angel just tell Nephi that the Tree represents the Love of God?
11:11-12.. What does the tree mean? The Angel disappears.

8:1-2...... Gathered seed, I had a vision
8:3-4...... Sons named, Dark and dreary
8:5-8...... Led into the dark and dreary, and lost sight of the Lord
8:9-12.... The Tree of Life
8:13-16.. Lehi calls to the righteous members of his family and they come
8:17-18.. Laman and Lemuel refuse to come
8:19-20.. Rod of Iron and Spacious Field (a world)
8:21-23.. Some are lost in the mists of darkness
8:23-25, 28.. Some partake, then are ashamed
8:26-27.. The Great and Spacious Building
8:29-30.. To be brief, some were valiant, and others...
8:31-34.. Most of those who seek the great and spacious build are drowned or lost
8:35-36.. Laman and Lemuel refuse and Lehi worries
8:37-38.. Lehi preached many things to Laman and Lemuel, then stopped speaking to them
9............ Nephi makes to sets of plates (not discussed in this lesson)
10:1....... This is the story of my life, but I've got to tell you about my family
10:2-6.... Jews taken captive and returned and the Messiah comes among them (in 600 years)
10:7-10.. John the Baptist
10:11..... The Messiah shall die, rise again, and then manifest Himself to the Gentiles (Is this the 2nd Comforter?)
10:12-14. The house of Israel is like an olive tree (See Jacob 5 for the whole prophecy)
10:15-16. I only wrote a few, and all this was still in the valley of Lemuel
10:17-22. Nephi wants to know by the Holy Ghost the truth and gives the recipe for doing so
11:1-6..... Nephi wants to know, and he is taken by an angel
11:7-11... I see the tree, but what does it mean?
11:12-21. Vision of the Virgin Mary
11:21-23. Meaning of the Tree
11:24-25. The Meaning of the Iron Rod
11:26-34. The Condescension of God is the Ministry and death of the Son of God
11:35-36. The Great and Spacious building is the pride of the world
12:1-15... Nephi's vision of his people from start to end
12:16-18. The filthy water is temptation (only way into the building)
12:19-23. Nephites wiped out and Lamanites become a filthy people
15:1-6..... Brothers fight, Nephi mourns, pulls himself together and prepares to talk to them
15:7-11... We must be humble to get answers from God
15:12-18. Explanation of being broken off the olive tree and grafted back in
15:19-20. Laman and Lemuel humble themselves
15:21-22. Nephi gives succinct answers, very unlike what the angel gave as an anwer
15:21-22. The tree was the Tree of Life
15:23-25. Why the Iron Rod is important
15:26-29. The waters are filthiness
15:30...... The gulf between righteous and wicked is filled with eternal fire
15:31-33. These are both temporal and spiritual, if you die in your sins you are filthy in the spirit world
15:34-36. No unclean thing can enter the Kingdom of God, so there is Outer Darkness

It struck me as I prepared this lesson what the Great and Spacious building really represents and how people get there.
What is the world proud of?
They are proud of celebrities.
What stands between the Tree of Life and the Great and Spacious Building?
Two things - The Filthy Waters and the Gulf of Eternal Fire
So how would someone get from the Tree of Life to the Great and Spacious Building?
They would have to leave the love of God behind, swim through the temptations of the world, and commit some sin, the most prevalent being Pride, and thus earn the support of the god of this world, Lucifer. With his support people are lifted up into that Great and Spacious Building. It is his building, and he controls it.

I thought I was going to become famous for publishing so many books. Could I be the next J.K. Rowling or the next Dean Koontz? Maybe, but only if it is the will of God. If I find myself in that position, I will need to shun anything that makes me a celebrity. I cannot enter that building, so where does that leave me? How can I get the message out I've been commanded to publish if I can't be a celebrity?

I'm really not sure right now. When I can answer this, I'll know better how to market my books.
