Earlier today, I was pondering why I don't see angels all the time. There are those I have met who frequently see the dead as clearly as we see each other. I wondered if my faith was lacking or if this was a gift reserved for only a few.
The response I got from the Spirit was I am not ready for such things. This confused me, as I have seen angels before and am willing to accept this as part of my life. The response came just as quickly and just as clearly, I am not ready for what I would see. Show me, I said, so I may understand.
As I stood there, atop an external staircase, I looked out over the city in which I work. I saw in open vision three plumes of smoke. It was given to my mind to know these plumes of smoke are future events. There will come a day when this city will be under attack. There will be war within the United States. I suspect the damage I saw is at least 5 years out, or possibly even 15 years away. Somehow, for me, when I communicate via the Spirit, in the manner of angels, I inevitably see the future.
I realized then I would not be able to go to work each day and function in society if every time I turned a corner I beheld another open vision of the future. I need to remain at the job I currently have so I can pay my bills, get out of debt, and hopefully become independent from the external income.
For now, I hope to develop this gift, and feel I can share my experiences here. My purpose in doing so is to receive feedback and guidance on how to improve this ability, without destroying my source of income, or my sanity.

Dragon,
You're already crazy...LOL. We all are, that's why we are here in this forum. I have come to understand that seeing the spiritual or the unseen world is the ability of "Seers".
To understand what is happening, we have to understand who we are. We are not our physical bodies. When they die, we continue. We experience the physical world through our physical bodies. Like portable lab equipment that allows us to see the visual spectrum of light, feel the spectrum of heat energy and lack of heat energy/cold, hear, smell and taste. These abilities were and are not available to us as spirits. Our spirits could experience the world around us, but not like our bodies can. (Look at my post under "Angels" for "What my dead dad told us" which explains this.)
Our spiritual bodies are also like our physical bodies but more fine and pure. We received our spiritual bodies much like we received our physical bodies. And with our spirit bodies we received the ability to recognize and interact with the world in ways that were not possible previously. (Just like our physical bodies give us more ability to sense and understand aspects of the world around us.)
We still have our spiritual bodies. So we still have all the abilities that our spiritual bodies have. We just learn as small children to ignore them because they are not accepted by others as real. Some people do not entirely ignore their spiritual input. When we say people are in tune with the spirit or they are spiritual giants, what we are recognizing is that they have the ability to recognize the subtle input from the spiritual world. When I compare the input we receive from the spirit world with the input from the physical world, it feels like listening to the ocean waves while standing next to a construction site with jack hammers, tractor engines, loud beeps and yelling happening at the same time. The input we receive from the physical world is very brash and demanding of our attention. The ocean waves are very soft and subtle in comparison. We really have to try to listen to the ocean waves to hear them over the sounds of the world.
Those who can learn to tune down the physical input enough to hear the spiritual input are considered spiritual masters, gurus, giants, etc. But they really don't have any ability that we all don't have. They just took the time to practice like. They tuned their instrument or body, spiritual and physical, to receive the spiritual input.
One of the problems with this tuning is that the spiritual world is not "set in stone" like the physical world. If you try to see the spiritual like you do the physical, you will go crazy! Literally, drugs, padded rooms and the lot... The spiritual world doesn't act like the physical world.
When you see visions of the future, they are rarely set in stone. They are possibilities. This was one thing Jonah had to learn. He told the people that if they didn't repent that they would be destroyed. But when he told them, he thought it was a done deal. He really didn't think that the future would change. And he became angry with the Lord when he repented or changed his plan to destroy the city.
The future has not yet been finalized. We can change our plans based on premonitions and thereby change the future. It happens all the time. The spiritual is so fine and pure that it is easy to manipulate. Science has now proven that we can manipulate the physical world, both on the quantum level and even on objects, plants and water. These physical things are very heavy and difficult to change through the spiritual. But the spiritual is almost effortless to manipulate. A single decision can change the entire spirit world. A word or though can create or destroy.
The spiritual world works in symbols, thoughts and ideas. When John saw the beasts in revelation, they were symbols of the physical. When Nephi saw the vision of the Tree of Life, he saw symbols of the physical. There isn't really an iron rod that we physically grab and follow to the tree of life. But there is a spiritual rod.
When you see the spiritual world, it does not mean that the physical world will be as you saw the spiritual. The 3 plumes of fire may never happen and if they do happen, they may not be literal but could show a spiritual attack of problem. If they are literal, they may not be caused by an outward attack and could be caused by riots, natural upheaval (ie. earthquake), or some other unrealized issue.
The problem many people have is that they lock themselves into interpreting a vision only one way. While on my mission, I knew a man that saw a vision of England as a ship sinking in the sea. He left the interpretation of the vision was that England would certainly sink into the sea and he was sure it would happen within a year or 2. He was a new member and left on a personal mission to warn the people of England. It has been many years since this happened. Was he crazy? Yes. But only because he was a new student of the spiritual and was not well practiced. The best solution I can give is to "ponder in your heart" the things you see in the spirit. The more practice you get, the better you will understand the visions you get. It is like the oil in the lamps parable. You can't give your oil to others. I can't give you my oil of experiences. You have to use your own lamp and learn to rely on it's light.
We can also influence the visions as see what we want to see. If you want to see an area/location or time/place, you can. It is called "Remote viewing" and has even been used successfully by the American government to gather intelligence. If you want to see a certain future, you can see that to. It may not be the real future but it will be the future you want to see. So the trick is to unattach yourself from the vision so that you will not influence it. Let go of the outcome. Be neutral and just observe. Don't draw conclusions while in the vision. Write the vision down un influenced by your mind/ego and then make your conclusions. Often times our conclusions will be wrong and the vision will close up and be lost.
To practice, do what you did before except, just observe. Ask questions or just desire to see before and after. You can also ask for guidance just as Nephi did when the angel/spirit showed him the vision and the interpretation of the vision.

Well, I've been trying to see the vision again to learn more details and practice seeing the future. What I have learned over the past week is this: One particular area of town holds the majority of the damage. Other parts of the metro area are only affected by the reduced spending accompanying peoples reduced confidence in their own safety. When attempting to 'remotely view' the scene from another location, the eyes and then face of that old serpent, Lucifer blocked the vision and it then went dark. He doesn't want me to see what he is working on.
